Style Icon Madonna with Canon 7D camera on Harper’s Bazaar cover

Shooooot!   Madonna is on the cover of this month’s Harper’s Bazaar aiming a Canon 7D camera tricked out with a Red Rock Micro video rig right at you.  Don’t know if it was photographer Tom Munro’s inspiration or who but as a SanDisk photo ambassador I can’t help but hope there was a SanDisk Extreme Pro CF card in that 7D capturing all the action.  M is wearing a great pair of Francesco Scognamiglio pants + a Jil Sander Turleneck.  Love it! @harpersbazaarus #CanonCamera #Madonna #TomMunro #7D @Canon_Camera @redrockmicro @MadonnaNation @SanDiskExtreme

Beach Strobes ! Mobile paradise with Impact brand Transmitters / Receivers

Beach Strobe (Canon 580EX IIs) syncs with an Impact receiver

Ahhhh, paradise.  Well, very close (anyway) for a photographer.  What else do you call it when you get to combine shooting on the beach in So Cal with using an incredibly effective and light-weight transmitter / receiver system that you can use with any camera and any flash system?  I’m telling you, paradise!   Otherwise known as the Impact Power Sync 16 Radio Slave System (which retails on B&H for $149.00 for the pair).

I used Impact and the following gear for my personal project that  I started photographing back in May ’11 (images to start being shared before the end of the year).

Gear:

Canon 7D

Canon 580EXIIs

Impact brand Transmitter + Receivers

Battery Pack = Lumedyne

Cards = SanDisk Extreme Pro 16gb, 90mbps

Thanks to @LightenUpShoot who were talking about the Impact Brand.  Not only do these radio slaves do the job so well but at a fraction of the cost of their competitors … and with very handy on/off switches on both devices (like extra fruit in the tropical drink you ordered).  See you at the bar after we wrap.

SuperGirl Jam 2011 – Snowboard + Skateboard on Venice Beach, CA

Yesterday I spent the afternoon on Venice Beach, CA documenting the AMAZING skateboard and snowboard contenders in the SuperGirl Jam 2011.   Yes I said snowboard, too!  Actual snow was created right down on the beach – and the skateboarders created some true inspiration for all the other girls (and guys !) in the crowd.   I met skater Samarria Brevard who won the supergirl cape in the AM jam and skaters Lacey Baker and Brooke Whipp who brought ten-fold of talent.  Here are some key images …

Yoga Portrait – Drinie Aguilar

Being a big fan of a high shutter speed at sunset, accompanied by strobe power I went down to Santa Monica Beach on Thursday to get this portrait of Drinie Aguilar.

Fireworks over Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles

Per usual my speedy SanDisk cards (16gb, 90mb/s) crunched through the .CRW files I was shooting off of the fast blasting final fireworks display that myself and friends witnessed from Echo Park, Los Angeles going off over Dodger Stadium.  You can see all the smoke and even the beautiful crescent moon that made an appearance last night on the Fourth.  Certainly glad to be able to celebrate !

Camera Sensor Inventor Dies – CCD vs. CMOS

A few days ago, on May 7th, the inventor of the CCD sensor (that’s the sensor that many digital cameras use) Williard Boyle, passed away, Image Sensors world noted on their blog.  He received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2009 for the invention which he and his partner George E. Smith created in 1969.   Imagine if camera manufacturers had jumped on this then !  Digital images of the first manned moon landing !

For you casual digital photography users, a CCD is a charge coupled device.  It is the sensor that many (but not all) digital cameras use to essentially transfer light properly from light to electrical signals and help it record as an digital image to your data card, or in my case SanDisk cards all the way).  Many other cameras use CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) sensors.

In 2003 when digital SLR cameras were first hitting the market in a major way for all professional photographers, I had a choice – CCDs or CMOS sensors.   I went with CMOS sensor cameras because I liked the way the pixels were arranged on the sensor – each color was stacked on top of each other like a perfect piece of cake for the light to bite into vs. being arranged next to each other on a plate.  The debate is still out there.   In fact, depending on what job you are doing one technology will likely end up being more beneficial for you than the other.

Some good reads on CCD and CMOS sensor technologies and their benefits can be found here:

BC Footwear Fall Cali Cool 2011 Images

Oh yeah!  Time to share the images + video I shot for BC Footwear’s Fall 2011 Campaign (http://www.bcfootwear.net).   BC Footwear, sister company of Seychelles (http://www.seychellesfootwear.com) has that California cool vibe I treasure.  Modern style with a vintage kick-back chic.

Video here:

Video on www.f8f11.com here: http://www.f8f11.com/#a=0&at=0&mi=1&pt=0&pi=5&s=1&p=-1

Big thanks to BC’s Art Director Jess Gary who gushed, “eeeeeeeeee.  These pictures are blowing my mind!”.   She + I worked together to bring a look that is current and also speaks to BC’s vintage influences.  I created my own Adobe Photoshop filters to make our images take on that Holga film flair so I could still shoot digital (the Olympus EPL1 for the stills, the Canon 7D for the video), fast (on SanDisk Extreme Pro cards www.sandisk.com), and get the look we wanted.

Marketing Director Elaine Pow made the shoot day an absolute treat ! ; not to mention the models (Carre Callaway, Charlotte Toates, Marie DeSauvage and Alexandra Feldman) who brought great energy.   Thank you ladies !  I had a great time !
